PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Stairs are where most composite deck installations lose their finish quality. The main surface looks great — boards laid cleanly, clips set, no exposed screws. Then you reach the step edge: raw board ends, a sharp corner, and hollow cores staring back at anyone who looks at the deck from below. The Terra Deck Ancient Wood Bullnose exists specifically to fix that.

The bullnose profile is purpose-built for stair treads and raised step edges. The rounded leading edge covers the front of each step — hiding hollow board ends, eliminating the sharp corner that concentrates wear and impact damage, and providing a smooth, comfortable surface for bare feet. It’s the component that takes a deck staircase from functional to finished.

Manufactured to Gen 5 co-extrusion standards, the Ancient Wood Bullnose shares the same polymer cap technology as the main decking boards. That means the colour match to the Ancient Wood deck surface is precise, not approximate. Warm earthy tones, that weathered timber character — it runs consistently from the deck surface down each step, all the way to the ground.

The embossed wood-grain surface on the bullnose provides meaningful grip underfoot, which matters on stair treads more than anywhere else on a deck. Morning dew, wet feet from a pool, or a Melbourne winter drizzle — the textured surface handles all of it better than a smooth profile would.

The Ancient Wood tone suits decks integrated into native gardens, sandstone or decomposed granite paths, and timber-frame homes where the staircase is a focal point rather than an afterthought. The warm, aged character of the colour gives stairs a grounded, natural quality that reads as organic rather than manufactured.

Q: What exactly does a bullnose board do that a standard decking board can't?
A: A standard decking board has a flat, squared profile on all edges. When used at a stair tread leading edge, that square corner concentrates foot impact, wears faster, and creates a sharp edge that's uncomfortable and potentially hazardous underfoot. The bullnose has a purpose-engineered rounded front edge that distributes foot pressure naturally, resists edge impact, and gives each step a professional, finished appearance that standard boards simply can't replicate.
Q: Does the Ancient Wood Bullnose match the decking boards in colour and texture?
A: Yes — both use the same Gen 5 co-extrusion polymer cap in the Ancient Wood colourway, so the colour and surface texture are consistent across the deck surface, fascia, and bullnose. The entire staircase reads as a single, cohesive system rather than a collection of near-matching components.
Q: How is a bullnose board fixed to a stair frame?
A: Bullnose boards are face-fixed to the stair frame with stainless steel screws, positioned so the rounded edge overhangs the front face of the stair frame by approximately 20–25mm. Pre-drill all fixing holes to prevent surface cracking. Two screws per joist is standard — one near each board edge. Titan Trade Centre can recommend the correct screw length for your specific frame depth.
Q: Is the bullnose profile slip-resistant when wet?
A: The embossed wood-grain surface texture on the bullnose provides considerably better grip than a smooth surface when wet — important for stair treads that may see morning dew, rain, or wet feet from a pool surround. For decks in particularly wet environments or with elderly users, ensure the subframe drains correctly and the stair surface isn't pooling water.
Q: Can bullnose boards be used on raised deck edges that aren't stairs?
A: Yes — the bullnose profile also works well on raised deck edges, balcony edges, and any elevated board end where a rounded rather than sharp edge is preferred. It creates a finished, deliberate look at the deck perimeter and is a clean alternative to flat fascia in certain design situations.
