Crescent White Internal PVC Cladding

What is PVC wall cladding and how is it different from traditional wall tiles or paint?
PVC wall cladding is a panel-based system that goes directly over an existing wall surface — no tiling, no skim-coating, no priming required. Each panel interlocks with the next using a tongue-and-groove system, which means installation is fast and achievable as a DIY project. Unlike tiles, PVC panels have no grout lines where mould can grow. Unlike paint, they don't peel, crack, or need reapplying every few years. PVC is also fully waterproof, which makes it far more suitable for bathrooms, laundries, and kitchens than painted plasterboard. In terms of maintenance, a wipe with a damp cloth is genuinely all it needs.
Can white PVC wall cladding panels go yellow over time?
Good-quality PVC cladding panels that have UV-stabilised pigment in the mix should resist yellowing for many years. The key is choosing panels with a stabilised white finish rather than a basic white coating applied over a natural-colour PVC base. Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners, bleach, or high-pressure steam on the surface regularly — these can degrade the stabilisers over time. In areas that receive direct strong sunlight through a window for hours each day, some panels may show gradual colour shifts over many years. For most indoor installations, yellowing is not a practical concern.
Do PVC wall panels need to be sealed at the edges and joins?
The join between panels in a tongue-and-groove system is generally water-resistant on its own. However, the perimeter edges — where panels meet a floor, ceiling, or adjacent wall — should be sealed with a flexible neutral-cure silicone sealant for full waterproofing, especially in bathrooms and wet areas. The colour of silicone you use matters; a white silicone sealant against white panels looks clean and intentional. Don't use acetate (acid-cure) silicone on PVC as it can damage the panel surface over time.
Can PVC cladding panels be installed directly over existing tiles?
In most cases, yes. PVC cladding panels can go straight over existing tiles as long as the tile surface is flat, firmly bonded, and free from significant lippage (height differences between tiles). Any cracked or loose tiles should be re-bonded or removed beforehand. Use a construction adhesive rated for non-porous surfaces and apply mechanical fixings at studs or noggins where possible. The result is a smooth new wall surface with no demolition, no tile disposal costs, and no re-waterproofing required.
